Every 30 years or so ….

Every 30 years or so, each generation seems to have to want to make the same stupid mistakes and relearn what they should have known.  Here it goes again, with the Monroe Developmental Center.  In 1979 there was a major flap regarding the MDC.   In a Democrat & Chronicle article from that era there is a clarification by the parents of the developmentally disabled that not all those who are institutionalized are capable of fitting into a group home scenario.  Those parents expressed a major disagreement with Dr. Scheiner whom they saw as advocating a kind of  ‘one size fits all’ care.

They continued:  “…we are not dealing with statistics, but with human lives,” and saying: ”A normalization blanket to cover all the mentally retard is ludicrous.  There will always be those who will need supervised care and controls.”

So here we are, a generation later.  This time it seems slated to be learned all over again, a sacrifice to the Governor’s Putting $ First?
